In-Brief

1. The US southern border is in chaos and is being swarmed by tens of thousands of refugees from Haiti. Tens of thousands more Haitians and others are now working their way through Mexico.
2. Both the $1T bi-partisan physical infrastructure bill and the $3.5T social infrastructure bill are tied up in a battle between radical-progressives Ds and moderate Ds. It is not clear if either will pass. The $3.5T social infrastructure will pass only if it is reduced to $1.5T. The internal battle among Democrats will determine if the $1.0T physical infrastructure bill passes.
3. Afghanistan continues to be a violent hellhole. Americans are still at risk as are millions of Afghans. The Biden State Department is in disarray.
4. The US economic recovery continues to be very strong. US labor shortages are widespread. Inflation tames for two months but spiked earlier in the summer.
5. Covid cases and deaths are now falling in the US fairly rapidly.
6. China makes incredible and dangerous economic and social changes in the name of “common prosperity,” moving it much closer to a purer socialist model and further away from capitalism. They have very serious short-term and long-term problems. This shift bodes ill for China because socialism has never worked in any modern society.
